Junior British League
Junior British League is played over 2 weekends during the season, and attracts the top juniors from all over the British Isles. The level of competition is therefore very high, even in the lower divisions!
Ael-y-Bryn has a boys team in division 2 of the league consisting of Daniel OConnell Jonathan Evans, Josh Jenkins, and Alex OConnell . Places within the team will become available to other Ael-y-Bryn players when the current players move out of the junior age group.
Ael-y-Bryn also attempted to qualify with a girls team in 2007, but was unsuccessful. However Beth Roberts, has been signed for the Parc Premier Sports team for the 2009 season and plays with Hannah Avery and Natasha Rees in girls division 1.
All Ael-y-Bryn players enjoyed excellent results in the 1st weekend and the following are extracts from reports which appeared appeared on the TTAW website ;
1st November, 2009
There was a reasonable representation from Wales at the Junior British League held last weekend at Fenton Manor.
Undoubtedly the most successful team during the weekend was Ael Y Bryn. The Ael-y-Bryn Team playing in Boys Division 2 had a tough but rewarding weekend in Stoke taking away the maximum 10 points by remaining undefeated all weekend.
Daniel OConnell, Jonathan Evans, Joshua Jenkins, and Alex OConnell, all performed to a high standard and are now 4 points clear of their nearest rivals Sheffield A. In true JBL style the boys had to fight for every point as no quarter was given in the ultra competitive league. Daniel OConnell manged a 100% average, with Josh and Jonathan not far behind. This is the best finishing position the team has ever achieved in the first weekend, the team are now hoping for success in the final weekend in February.
The Parc Premier Sports team consists of Natasha Rees, Hannah Avery, Beth Roberts and Amy Palin. We were delighted to be moved to the 1st division which would be a bigger challenge and enable the team to play against better players.
On the first weekend we competed against the following teams:
DHS Greenhouse Progress '1' : Lost 5-1
Bridge Club: Drew 3-3
Team Peniel A: Won 4-2
Irish Girls (Or Ireland as they are also known): Lost 5-1
and, the final game of the weekend against Batts Raquetsports the other all Welsh girl team in the division. Parc Premier Sport managed a win in a tightly contested match. This match was played in good spirit and sportsmanship, and I was impressed by the professionalism, integrity of all the players.
Overall we Won 2, Lost 2, Drew 1 - finishing in 4th place with 5 points
Parc Premier Sports also won the 'Best Girls Team' award for the weekend nominated by the JBL organisers, Natasha, Hannah and Beth received a trophy each. Just reward for a team who's determination, tenacity, attitude and approach to the tournament is second to none, and I am proud to be part of the team. It was a great team effort and each individual knows the part they played in such a competitive division. Well done to each one of you. Also, good luck to all those Welsh players who play in the JBL.
