Pen-y-dre Tenants and Residents Association Ael-y-Bryn Closed Tournament

All top table tennis clubs hold their own “closed” tournament (only club players can enter). Our club has been very fortunate to receive generous funding each year from the Pen-y-dre Tenants and Residents Association who sponsor the tournament on an annual basis.

The tournament took place on Sunday 26th of September, this is the 4th time that the popular competition has been played at Ael-y- Bryn table tennis club, again sponsored by the Pen-y-Dre Tenants and Residents Association.
Boys and Girls groups got underway at 10.30am and only the top 2 players in each group would go through to the semi-final stage. Last years winners Ashley Perry and Beth Roberts, progressed through their group smoothly whilst Laura Edwards and Alex OConnell also won their respective groups. The girls semi-finals saw Beth Roberts playing Rachel Cuss and Laura Edwards playing Sophie Cunningham. Beth and Laura won through to face each other in a very exciting final. Beth won the first set, but Laura fought back winning the next 2. Beth regained her composure to win the 4th set, and the match was decided in the 5th and final set, with Beth managing to win thereby retaining her name on the best female player shield for the 4th year in a row. The boys semi final saw Alex OConnell  playing Cori Hynam, and Ashley Perry playing Bradley Trigg. Alex managed a comfortable win over Cori, and Bradley put up a good fight against Ashley Perry taking a set off him, but it was Ashley and Alex in the boys final. In the final Alex picked up his game, and whilst Ashley played well, he was unable to retain the Best Male Player shield , as Alex played his best table tennis ever to win the final.

The Best Newcomers event was played as a round robin and won by Bradley Trigg, runner up was Leon Price.

In the doubles event Jack Rees and Leon Price played the final against Beth Roberts and Lloyd Williams. The match was very close with Beth and Lloyd managing to win in the 5th set.

With the closed tournament complete, all Ael-y-Bryn players now look forward to the start of the season next month, the club has a “friendly” against Newport on Tuesday, and their first league match on the 7th October  at Cwmbran in The Eastern Valley League.

The club would like to thank The Pen-y-Dre Tenants and Residents Association for again supporting the closed tournament. Picture shows competitors and Mr Carl Cuss Secretary Pen-y-Dre Tenants and Residents Association.
